Grosse Pointe South High School Science Laboratory
Grosse Pointe Farms, MI
MICCO is serving as general contractor for the 2-story, 27,000 square foot science laboratory and classroom addition. This complicated project involves “connecting” two existing school structures with a matching steel, block and masonry addition.
The project’s challenges began with a tight and congested project site occupied by nearly 3,000 students, faculty and staff. Poor soil conditions called for sophisticated foundation systems that included 40% of the footprint to be covered in column pads up to 20” thick and spanned by grade beams.
Other construction features include the partial and delicate demolition of a bridge that spans the existing structures to carry pedestrians and mechanical systems. The challenge entails installing new mechanical systems and runs without disrupting existing systems to keep the facility in full operation during construction.
